Lord, it is difficult to get a reliable list of Hank Garland's sessions for other artists (most of his best work).
ReplyDeleteJust for fun, I learned and precisely transcribed Hank's exact chart for "Jingle Bell Rock". I got every note. I thought it was easy, but then I began hearing little bends and flats that I did not notice at first, It made a big difference. There is nothing outrageous about his choice of notes, but playing them so they sound easy was not so easy.
I love that he flats the high D in the 2d measure of the intro, —it gives it that christmassy sound. I suppose it'd be easier on an L-5, but with the mini humbucker on my elderly Tele, it sounded fine.
At first, I thought it was pretty straightforward and simple as the song is mostly 1-4-5, —and the song structure IS easy (5 minutes). As for his famous intro lick, that was a little more difficult (an hour). Getting the right notes in the right place is straightforward, but playing it with the ease and elan that Garland had was NOT easy (2 hours!).
You need a cut-a-way, and I am a traditionalist, so my jazz boxes are all non-cut. I used my '63 Tele. It has a jazz humbucker at the neck, but with Fender's 7.25" neck radius, it's a little sticky, but do-able. It sure is fun to play.
In NYC EVERY professional player has a Tele with some sort of Jazz PUP at the neck. One has to tailor instruments to fit easily in cabs and overheads. Versatility in one guitar can mean making a date of not. With tears, I got rid of my '56 bassman, in favour of a '64 Deluxe Reverb. If you swap out the speaker for an alnico. they really sing. You can play just about any venue or studio in Manhattan. ...But I really miss my Bassman. —same circuit and speakers as the Super Reverb. Four 10s and 40 watts —is a nice combo.
I think I am gonna' find a 1937 or '38. 17" L-5. They are priced oddly low and most are X-braced. You can pay more for a '40s L-7!
