JIMMIE DOLAN AND HIS TEXAS RAMBLERS
MODERN 20-576

SPANISH BELLS                                                                            55-57-54-53
Opens  with tinkling bell effect, then solos by piano, guitar and fiddle. Novel mixture of mickey and jump, but it doesn’t add up.

TENNESSEE BABY                                                                        65-68-63-60
Flip is orthodox hill ditty. Jimmie sings it well, Ramblers give clean rhythmic backing.

TENNESSEE BABY                                                                        72-70-72-74
Swingy ditty is projected with punch and pep, if not a great singing voice, by the composer. The song’s the thing here.

GOOD-BYE MY ONE AND ONLY                72-70-72-74
Dolan sings another of his compositions, this one a catchy weeper, done at a bright tempo with a persuasive beat.

ALL ALONE IN TEXAS                                                                    75-75-74-76
Poignant ditty in the Texas-Mexico border style is sung with intense conviction by Dolan, with lively string support.

I’M GONNA WHITTLE YOU DOWN TO SIZE                                    78-78-78-78
Both the tune and the treatment have a touch of Floyd Tillman-which is all to the good. Dolan sells the ditty, which he wrote competingly.

HOT ROD MAMA
Ramblin’ Jimmie Dolan has a funny item here that he delivers in smilin’ fashion. A platter that might earn some deejay and juke action.

NICOTINE FITS                                        72
Comical ditty about what can happen to devotees of the weed is warbled to a fast beat by Dolan. If it’s spun by deejays, it won’t be on programs sponsored by tobacco firms.

RAMBLIN’ JIMMIE DOLAN
CAPITOL 2830
LOOK-A HERE, BABY                                                                    77

Rapid-patter opus is delivered infectiously by Dolan. Novelty lyrics and the happy backing, including some right fine piano playing, lift this side above many new entries. Could stick around for some time and pull loot.

I’LL NEVER GO SAILING AGAIN               74
Dolan warbles an off-beat ditty about the sea and invests it with lots of appeal. The beat is gay, and that should mean plentiful juke and jockey attention.

A SAILOR’S LETTER                                                                      75
The letter he’s sending home begs reassurance of her love. It’s all wrapped up in bright melody and rhythm.

An open road and fast car are what he relies on to shake the blues. Another listenable slicing.
