 (note by Robert Platt:) The accompaniment on Red River Dave’s Continental recordings above was by Sula’s Texas Rangers. Sula Litivich was a Jewish musical director for Continental who knew little about hillbilly music but would get enthused and holler “More cowboy, More cowboy” as if this would inspire musicians. The musicians were the Texas Top Hands, who travelled from San Antonio to New York in 1946 to record for Savoy. Some early Continental singles were reviewed in Billboard in January 1946, and may have been recorded before the Texas Top Hands arrived
